Below there is a you-tube clip which illustrates the importance of making math relavant to children's lives. Money is something that is very important to teach and knowing how to calculate money is a life skill that children will learn.

In order to teach the students the teachers must have good resources and helpful tasks. Below there are a number of resources for teachers to use when teaching students skip counting.
When teaching it is important to use a variety of ways to teach because not every student learns the same. On the next page (or by following the link below) there are a variety of different task ideas for counting. These could be incorporated into teaching by having group activities over a week with four activities and each group rotating through each. This allows the same information to be given to the students in five different ways.

The teacher could also have a number of newspapers and give the children a bugdget where they are too buy a number of items from the paper that add up to the budget.
The above dot points are hands on tasks and get the children activitly involved. Getting the children involved, especially in math, is essential to teaching. The above activities are fun but they get the children thinking about money and how to calculate it. They get the children thinking about the value of money and are a great way to teach children about money.
