Teachers must follow VELS in order to know what exactly they are teaching. When teaching skip counting and associated patterns to Grade 1 and 2 teachers must teach the students to “skip count by 2s, 4s and 5s from 0 to 100 starting from any natural number” and teach the students to “use models and arrays to support the development of skip counting” to therefore “recognise patterns created by skip counting” (VELS).
In order to teach the students the teachers must have good resources and helpful tasks. Below there are a number of resources for teachers to use when teaching students skip counting.
When teaching it is important to use a variety of ways to teach because not every student learns the same. On the next page (or by following the link below) there are a variety of different task ideas for counting. These could be incorporated into teaching by having group activities over a week with four activities and each group rotating through each. This allows the same information to be given to the students in five different ways.
